Alina Shimova (born in Russia in 1985) is a contemporary figurative painter living and working in Miami, USA. Her work lies at the intersection of contemporary figuration , animalism , spiritual symbolism , pop art, modern mythology , and reflections on human identity .
Passionate about art since childhood, she entered art school at the age of twelve and received rigorous classical training for five years. She then studied under the Russian painter Mikhail Satarov, whose teaching enabled her to master the traditional techniques of portraiture , still life , and landscape painting . She also developed training in fine art restoration and an early interest in psychology, elements that continue to inform the symbolic depth of her work today.
His early influences came from the great Russian pictorial tradition, particularly from Ivan Aivazovsky, whose mastery of light and seascapes profoundly shaped his artistic sensibility. During this period, his classical works were featured in several group exhibitions and entered private collections in Russia and Europe.
A trip to the United States in 2018 marked a turning point in her career. The discovery of American museums and the creative freedom inherent in the contemporary art scene transformed her artistic vision and led her to develop a personal language free from academic conventions. Inspired by the representation of powerful women in American popular culture, she created her first series dedicated to contemporary heroines, exploring notions of strength, vulnerability, and female identity.
Her work then evolved towards a more spiritual and symbolic exploration. Based in Miami, Alina Shimova developed the New Totems series, which marked a new stage in her career. Through a characteristic palette of deep blacks and gold highlights, she transforms animals into contemporary totemic figures, bearers of ancestral wisdom and psychological resonance. "Animals are ancestral guides that reflect human archetypes," the artist states.
In this series, works such as Monkey Power, Horse in Black, GOAT, Bear With the Cigar, and Classic Ganesha explore the relationships between nature , spirituality , contemporary society , and identity construction . Anthropomorphism becomes a visual language used to question the power, fragility, aspirations, and contradictions of humankind.
The artist's many international experiences have profoundly enriched her visual vocabulary. Having lived in Casablanca, Cairo, Nice and London, and travelled to more than fifty countries, she draws on Hindu, Egyptian, North African and Western traditions to build a body of work based on the interconnection of cultures and forms of life.
Committed to animal protection, Alina Shimova was also a co-founder and vice-president of the Union of Animal Artists of Russia. A portion of the proceeds from her sales is dedicated to wildlife conservation initiatives, thus extending the humanist and ecological values conveyed by her work into the real world.
Her work has been exhibited at numerous international events, including Context Art Miami , Art Basel Miami Week , Artexpo New York , Artexpo Dallas , Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary , Qatar Art Festival , Red Dot Miami , and at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles during Frieze Art Week. In 2026, she presented her work for the first time in a museum setting at the group exhibition Equilibrium at the MORA Art Museum in Jersey City, where her New Totems series confirmed her evolution toward a more introspective and symbolic aesthetic.
Today, Alina Shimova stands out as a unique figure in contemporary figurative painting , combining classical technique , spiritual mythology , modern animalism , pop culture , and ecological commitment . Her works, held in private collections in the United States, Europe, Russia, and Dubai, invite viewers to reconsider the profound connections between humankind, nature, and the symbols that shape our contemporary societies.
