Description

This striking black-and-white photograph captures a dynamic scene of a woman striding confidently across a deserted beach, clad in a sleek, form-fitting black outfit. Her attire is accentuated by a patterned headscarf, billowing slightly with her brisk movement, and chic sunglasses that add an air of mystery. She carries a briefcase in one hand, suggesting purpose and urgency. The sand beneath her feet shows fresh tracks, leading from distant waves toward the viewer, capturing a moment of transition and movement. The cloudy sky looms dramatically, casting a soft, diffused light that enhances the textural contrasts of the sand, sea, and attire. This artwork uniquely blends elements of fashion with a narrative of expedition, evoking themes of determination and resilience against the backdrop of nature’s grandeur.

Presentation

Tony's signature photographic style encompasses movement in the pursuit of capturing moments of sensuality that reveal the soul. He is adept at creating conditions revealing a person's true nature, capturing compelling, stirring and enduring images that reveal the sensuality in us all.

Tony Potts has been associated with a camera lens and fashion in one way or another all his life. His mother, Judy Barraclough, was a world-famous model of the 1950s & 60s, and his Uncle David Potts was one of Australia's best-known Time/Life photographers of the 1940s & 50s.

Influenced by a world of fashion and photography as a child, Tony's career started as a camera assistant to the creative director and main photographer of Vogue Australia, whilst also studying photography at the Australian Centre of Photography when he quit after his first year at Sydney University doing a science-based degree.

Tony left Australia in 1975 for Europe and succeeded as an editorial model working with world-renowned fashion photographers such as Helmut Newton (French Vogue), Denise Piel, Patrick Demarchelier, Albert Watson, Toscani and many others. He appeared in many fashion magazines, including Harpers Bazaar and Vogue Magazines worldwide, including Australian, British, German and Italian Vogue, whilst living for 2 to 3 years at a time in London, Paris and New York.

Returning to Australia in 1981 with clarity and determination to interpret and distil the essence of life into his photography, Tony was soon shooting editorial fashion for all the leading contemporary Australian fashion designers and magazines, including Vogue and Harpers.

Tony's main focus these days is the art world of photography and the management of his 40-year archive, offering limited editions of his past and present work, with a collection of single edition vintage prints on show. His best-known images hang in prestigious private collections in Australia and the US. He is known for his B&W nudes and fashion editorial, particularly his Australian work in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s.
