Gian Carlo Calma was born in Rome in 1938. After a school of clothing and poster design, saw the first experience of painting in the film industry. His teacher, Averardo Renato Ciriello, teaches him the art of film Affix: sketches, Flani, posters, brochures are the products that allow him to acquire a very refined technique.
In the late 70s, following the serious crisis of the entire Italian film system, he came to painting on canvas. The beginnings, he was engaged with classical subjects, eminently picturesque background. In the mid-1980s, he began to feel the need to paint different themes, fascinated by the ambiguous silence of the masks and puppets, a sign of a deeper metaphysical reflection that would certainly lead, soon after, to a crisis of creativity. These were difficult years, where his needs for expression can find neither the form nor the meaning which is sympathetic.
In 1987 he encountered surrealism. This way of thinking and looking at things in the world makes it possible to approach the different realities finally, finally heard. His art, always penetrated by sometimes amused, sometimes painful irony, seems to have found the right path, combining intensive discussion of means and form now typical of the late modern society.
Since 1980, he has been a member of the “100 pittori di Via Margutta”
