Shigeichi Nagano was born in Japan in 1925. A graduate in economics, Nagano planned on a desk job until a chance meeting with an old friend who hired Nagano as an editor for a new magazine.
In 1949, Nagano worked freelance and traveled all over Japan, taking pictures.
From 1954 he worked on a series: The Five o'clock Salaryman (1959).
In 1960 he received the Photographer of the Year award from the Japan Photo Critics Association and the Ina Nobuo Award in 1986. Nagano has also won annual awards from the Photographic Society of Japan in 1991 and 1995.
Nagano's works are in permanent collections at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, among others. Commenting on his oeuvre, the artist explained: "Taking photographs in Tokyo means being committed to 'now', the age in which I live."
