Vova by Robert Saller is an impactful work from his celebrated Bad Beautiful series – an ongoing exploration of how political and cultural imagery embeds itself in public memory. Created in 2009, the painting uses the artist's characteristic multi-stencil, roller-applied technique to merge two sharply contrasting portraits of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin).
The first, painted in warm, peach tones, is the innocent, almost cherubic image of Lenin as a child – an image reproduced endlessly on red star badges worn by every Soviet Little Octobrist schoolchild. Layered behind this is a rare depiction of Lenin in his final days, seated in a wheelchair, physically and mentally diminished by illness. Saller overlays these images in a striking palette of violet, rose, and cream, creating a dissonant but visually harmonious whole.
By confronting the viewer with both the idealised and the vulnerable human image of a historical figure, Saller invites a critical reflection on propaganda, hero-making, and the passage of time. This is an artwork that blends the language of pop art with the conceptual weight of political commentary – ideal for collectors seeking bold, conversation-starting works with layered meaning.

Robert Saller (b. 1967) is a Ukrainian contemporary artist known for his bold fusion of pop art aesthetics, conceptual satire, and post-Soviet critique. A graduate of the Uzhhorod College of Applied Arts, Saller has been a key member of the underground art group Poptrans since 1996. He now lives and works in Lviv, Ukraine.
Saller primarily works with acrylics, rarely using brushes. Instead, he applies paint through layers of stencils using rollers and sponges, creating a graphic, print-like texture reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein's visual language. Yet beneath the surface gloss lies biting irony and psychological depth. His works often deconstruct gender dynamics, emotional trauma, and cultural mythologies through a visual language of seductive colours and familiar iconography.
In his acclaimed Man Woman Blackout series, Saller uses luminophore pigment to make hidden elements glow in the dark – a literal metaphor for the unseen layers of human relationships. Other notable series, such as Bad Beautiful and Carpathian Album, reframe innocence, nationalism, and nostalgia with unsettling wit.
Robert Saller's artworks are at once visually striking and intellectually disarming, drawing the viewer into a world where irony, violence, and desire coexist just beneath the surface.
