Description

Robert Saller's Mary and Nevada-tan is a powerful conceptual painting from his Bad Beautiful series, completed in 2009. In this work, he confronts the viewer with two real-life child figures involved in violent crimes: Mary Bell and “Nevada-tan." But rather than sensationalize or moralize, Saller reframes them within a pop-art visual language – flat tones, cartoon outlines, paper-doll aesthetics – to critique how society processes innocence, guilt, and trauma.

The girls' faces are painted in a bold, poster-like style. They are surrounded by accessories and cut-out shapes that recall children's playthings – ballet shoes, skirts, scissors, and anime-like silhouettes. The emotional contrast between content and form is deliberate: beauty clashes with horror, childhood with brutality, and cultural memory with media spectacle.

Executed in acrylic, Mary and Nevada-tan is a work that forces us to question what happens when real-life tragedy enters the realm of pop culture. Saller, a key figure in the “Poptrans" group, challenges the viewer to go beyond aesthetics and reflect on society's tendency to mythologize – and consume – even its most uncomfortable stories.

Presentation

Robert Saller (b. 1967) is a Ukrainian contemporary artist known for his bold fusion of pop art aesthetics, conceptual satire, and post-Soviet critique. A graduate of the Uzhhorod College of Applied Arts, Saller has been a key member of the underground art group Poptrans since 1996. He now lives and works in Lviv, Ukraine.

Saller primarily works with acrylics, rarely using brushes. Instead, he applies paint through layers of stencils using rollers and sponges, creating a graphic, print-like texture reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein's visual language. Yet beneath the surface gloss lies biting irony and psychological depth. His works often deconstruct gender dynamics, emotional trauma, and cultural mythologies through a visual language of seductive colours and familiar iconography.

In his acclaimed Man Woman Blackout series, Saller uses luminophore pigment to make hidden elements glow in the dark – a literal metaphor for the unseen layers of human relationships. Other notable series, such as Bad Beautiful and Carpathian Album, reframe innocence, nationalism, and nostalgia with unsettling wit.

Robert Saller's artworks are at once visually striking and intellectually disarming, drawing the viewer into a world where irony, violence, and desire coexist just beneath the surface.
