Born in 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach, Germany, Thomas Ruff rose to international prominence in the late 1980s as a member of the Düsseldorf School, a group of young photographers who had studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher and became known for their experimental approach. Among these photographers are Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, and Candida Höfer.
Ruff in particular made a radical break, establishing a distinct approach to conceptual photography through the use of color, the purposeful manipulation of source imagery and the enlargement of the photographic print to the scale of monumental painting. The extreme variations of technical means used, ranging from anachronistic devices to the most advanced computer simulators and covering nearly all ground in between are his trademark.
In his most known series visiting domestic interiors, austere portraits, blurred pornography, photograms, and found JPEGs, he explores the conditions of visual perception, also in relation to our use of the photographic apparatus, and the conditioning of our view of the world through photographic images.
“I think that historically photographs may have been made in a naive and honest way, when photographers believed in the 'pencil of nature' and recording what was in front of the camera…But photography quickly came to be used in a prejudicial way, losing its innocence and consequently its ability to communicate."

To note : The work is produced using Iris printing on rag paper.
Thomas Ruff was born in 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach. He lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. He studied photography from 1977 to 1985 with Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. A leading figure at the renowned Düsseldorf School of Photography, alongside fellow students such as Candida Höfer, Andreas Gursky, Axel Hütte and Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff became famous primarily for his portraits.
Whether through the recovery of pre-existing images or through the use of digital technology, Thomas Ruff reveals the current disconnect between the subject and their image, and their impossible claim to identification and authenticity.
The initiator of large format, Thomas Ruff is undoubtedly one of the heavyweights in the contemporary photography market.
