Makino’s mixed-media sculptures fuse human and animal forms to question identity, emotion, and coexistence.

Biography

Born in Tokyo in 1986. Sculptor. Graduated from the Department of Crafts at Tama Art University in 2010, where she studied metalwork and simultaneously taught herself wood carving.

Makino creates mixed-media sculptures that combine human and animal characteristics into a single being. By juxtaposing “humans and animals" as one might compare “oneself and others," she explores empathy, aversion, and resistance—emotions arising from similarities and differences. The act of embodying these sensations in one form reflects her ongoing inquiry into the questions: and

She received the Second Prize at the Tokyo Midtown Award 2010 and the Grand Prize at the CCC Award 2016. Her works have been exhibited at Art Taipei 2019, Roppongi Art Night 2023, and Sono Aida #TMA.
