John Monteith

Born in: 1973

Canada

Biography
John Monteith is a Canadian artist who creates drawings and paintings based on his perceptive sensitivity of architectural space and scale. He lives and works in Berlin. He studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design where he graduated in 1997. He then earned a Master of Fine Arts at the Parsons The New School for Design, New York in 2008. John Monteith draws painstakingly with graphite, oil paint or wax and pigment on drafting film. With a focus on method of construction – evocative of a Constructivist and Concrete approach to art making, Monteith works in layers and with single shapes that grow in multitude. His works maintain a multi-dimensional, vibratory, dynamic tension. John Monteith’s overall approach to art making traces its ideological origins back to Andreas Huyssens concepts of the palimpsestic nature of the urban sphere. His practice has deep connections to the ideas of “urban relativity” as suggested by Constant Nieuwenhuys (particularly, Nieuwenhuys’ New Babylon project), Guy Debord and Asger Jorn. John Monteith has been awarded grants from The Canada Council for the Arts, The Ontario Arts Council and Parsons The New School for Design. His works are displayed in various international private and corporate collections, which include the TD Bank Canada, the I3 Investors Group and the New School, New York. Monteith has exhibited internationally in diverse solo and group exhibitions, including the Tate Modern and MoMA PS1.
