Presentation

Hicham Benohoud was born in 1968 in Marrakech. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 1987, he went to the regional educational center of Marrakech, in order to teach plastic arts in colleges. The teaching profession quickly seemed irreconcilable to his vocation as an artist: he left teaching to professionalize in the visual arts and, in 2003, continued training at the Higher School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg. In his first works in 1998, he exhibited thousands of small identity portraits, meticulously juxtaposed to each other and glued to canvas or nailed directly to the wall. The 4,455 small images on a wall, 4,200 painted and laminated photographs or 3,600 painted photographs tightened by an elastic band immediately amaze by the originality of the approach and underline the unclassifiable nature of the artist's works: he is as much a plastic artist as he is photographer. With the series La Salle de classe, Hicham Benohoud has developed a photographic approach based on staging. He borrows objects from the classroom environment and uses them to show his models in an unusual “setting”. The photos convey an impression of unease. However, the artist only picks up what he finds, but diverts it from his usual use. Hicham Benohoud has exhibited several times in Morocco and abroad. He participated in "Africa Remix", one of the biggest international events dedicated to contemporary art in Africa. He has also participated in two important exhibitions: “contemporary photography in the Arab world” at the Aperture Foundation in New York and “Regards des photographes arabe contemporains” at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. Two monographs have been devoted to the work of Hicham Benohoud: La salle de classe (2001) and Des lycéens par-vous (2002). Benohoud's work is exhibited by major international artistic institutions: Center Georges Pompidou Palais de Tokyo Institut du Monde Arabe - Paris Aperture Foundation - New York Benohoud's works also appear in prestigious public and private collections: MuCEM de Marseille Tate Modern de London Reina Sofia Center in Madrid
