A blue, ambiguous, elongated shape jumps out from an intense black background. Because of this black, there is nothing that can distract us from the subject of this painting. In this elongated canvas, the blue in the top corners, in its lightest shade, seems to be suspended from clusters of soft pink balls, which contrast sweetly with the pastel blue. These pink balls are reflected in work, as a dense bunch about a quarter of the way, and as a disintegrated cluster in the centre. If the bushes or clusters are connected, a Y-shape is created in the top half of the painting.

The leg of the Y is followed by a sort of crack in the blue. Here we come across the most dramatic element in the painting. The blue gives way to a hard opening that shows the same black as the background, almost creating a feeling that a knife has been stuck through and taken down with a hard stroke. The sense of drama is further enhanced by the sharp, thin red stripe that extends from the top of the "crack" to about halfway. The intense colour and sharp shape of the opening almost suggests blood. Yet it is not only black, open, but an emptiness that we see: pink collections of small spheres and thin, smooth lines of light blue also try to bridge what the imaginary sharp knife has done.

Then the blue itself, the colour that has been used to its utmost potential. Overall, she departs in a pastel shade at the top to a deep azure in the lower regions of the painting. Monique Leliefeld shows in blue a huge repertoire of texture and shapes. At the top, it seems as if there are hard creases in paper, the sharp points at the top play a role in this. In the centre, the dark blue dots are organic, the shoots are reminiscent of cells of the nervous system, with thin and long shoots providing sensation. At the bottom, where shades of green also return, the azure now feels like heavy, hanging, rigid, almost tired. It forms a strong and stable basis for this work.

Monique Leliefeld

Netherlands Born in: 1950

Monique Leliefeld is a Dutch painter of emotion. Her figurative technique is excellent and she uses her precise style to capture fleeting emotions inside abstract paintings. Truly evoking emotions from the viewer with her work.

Leliefeld works and reworks her work until an essence of emotion are distilled into her forms. Standing in front of her work immediately twangs an emotion in the viewer. Her joie de vivre series evokes an immediate sense of happiness. The emotion in Mysterious Power is not a raw or wild, but subdued strength. Her technique masterfully works in texture and different stratification in all her work.
