In “The Red Line, II” there is almost a fight. This fight takes place between the deep, dark, even black on the one hand, suggesting an enormous depth that is so far away that we cannot see it. On the other hand, there is the pastel blue at the top, which changes in different surfaces to a deep blue that is given green as a stable base, a colour that lies next to blue in the colour palette. As an art historian, this work by Monique Leliefeld is difficult to place in a category, except in that of her own oeuvre. Ambiguous shapes, a range of textures, calm colours against contrasts, calm versus drama, the enormously free-associative aspect of her work: it can all be found in this work and a large part of her work.

“The Red Line II” is a striking appearance that will be a real eye-catcher wherever it hangs. The strikingly chosen format, the subtle play of shades of blue in combination with different structures, the deeply saturated black, these are all elements that ensure that the entire surface of the canvas continues to be examined by the viewer. Besides, the blue has a serene effect, which the presence of this painting, even in the corner of the eye, has a calming effect on people.

Monique Leliefeld

Netherlands Born in: 1950

Monique Leliefeld is a Dutch painter of emotion. Her figurative technique is excellent and she uses her precise style to capture fleeting emotions inside abstract paintings. Truly evoking emotions from the viewer with her work.

Leliefeld works and reworks her work until an essence of emotion are distilled into her forms. Standing in front of her work immediately twangs an emotion in the viewer. Her joie de vivre series evokes an immediate sense of happiness. The emotion in Mysterious Power is not a raw or wild, but subdued strength. Her technique masterfully works in texture and different stratification in all her work.
