Josep Guinovart

Born in: 1927

Spain

Emergent Artist

Josep Guinovart i Bertran (Barcelona 1927-2007) was a Catalan painter, designer and engraver. After studying at the school of Decorative Arts of Barcelona and his first exhibition in 1948, he won a scholarship in 1953 from the French Institute to study in Paris for five months. On his return to Barcelona, he began creating some abstract artwork resembling a collage. In the 60s, his work took a political perspective. The artist was actively involved in the anti-Franco movement and made many propaganda posters for this cause. In the 70s, he started creating some unconventional pieces with the constant use of three-dimensional elements, mostly on large scale. He shows through his work that the categories "realism" and "asbtract" are outdated today. In 1994, a museum dedicated to his work was inaugurated in Agramunt, the town where his mother was born and to which he has always been specially attached. He died December 2007 at age 80 after a stroke.
