Biografía
Michael James O'Brien es fotógrafo, profesor, curador, poeta y activista.
Actualmente con sede en Atlanta, GA. Ha realizado exposiciones individuales en Nueva York, París, Beijing, Hong Kong, Amberes, Estambul, Liverpool y Savannah GA. además de haber trabajado en la colección permanente de la National Portrait Gallery de Londres. Su trabajo ha aparecido en publicaciones como Rolling Stone, Vogue UK, The New Yorker, GQ, Eyemazing, Black & White Photography UK, The Guardian, The Financial Times entre muchas otras. Ha sido editor general de Verbal Abuse, el zine de poesía y editor colaborador de la revista Departures.
Su libro Girlfriend; Men, Women, and Drag, con texto de Holly Brubach, fue publicado por Random House en inglés, francés y japonés en 2000.
De 1900 a 2000 hizo toda la fotografía fija para Drawing Restraint 7 de Matthew Barney y Cremaster 1,2,4 y 5 que se exhibieron en todo el mundo.
Durante más de 20 años, O'Brien fue miembro de ACTUP y voluntario de GMHC y Terrence Higgins Trust UK. Fue coproductor de Love Ball en Nueva York y París, que a lo largo de los años recaudó más de $ 3 millones para personas que viven con el VIH / SIDA.
Fue director creativo de DAA / Designers Against Aids en 2011-12 y produjo la campaña Live Positive para la organización flamenca de concienciación sobre el VIH, SENSOA en 2013.
O'Brien tiene su sede en Atlanta, donde es el presidente de fotografía en el Savannah College of Art and Design / SCAD.
Actualmente es el presidente del Consejo Asesor de Atlanta Celebrates Photography.
