¿Qué tienen en común las obras "Guernica" de Picasso y "La Consagración de Napoléon" de David? Seguro que te quedaste sin palabras contemplándolas durante largos minutos la primera vez que las viste en persona, y las recordarás durante mucho tiempo.
Una de las razones por las que estas pinturas te impactaron tanto es que tienen dimensiones sumamente importantes, incluso gigantescas. Con 27 m² para el lienzo de Picasso y más de 50 m² para el de David, son lo que podemos llamar pinturas "gran formato" que sería difícil exponer en tu salón.
Afortunadamente, la pintura de gran formato aún puede tomar dimensiones más modestas sin perder esa inclinación estética que nunca deja de captar la atención de su espectador. Los artistas siempre han comprendido que la proporción es uno de los componentes principales de la percepción estética, y una obra de dimensiones significativas requiere, necesariamente, un enfoque diferente por parte del espectador.
