Né en 1947 à la périphérie de Londres, Putland a commencé à photographier à l'âge de 9 ans. C'est un photographe portraitiste et photojournaliste réputé pour ses nombreuses archives de photographies de musiciens et d'autres sujets célèbres. Son travail actuel est davantage axé sur la photographie de musiciens classiques, ainsi que sur la photographie de mode et de voyage.
