Adrian Ghenie

Adrian Ghenie is a Romanian painter born in Baia Mare in 1977. He divides his time between Cluj-Napoca, Berlin and London. Adrian Ghenie studied Fine Arts in Baia Mare from 1991 to 1994. He then joined the University of Art and Design of Cluj-Napoca from which he graduated in 2001. The artist's style is often compared to that of Francis Bacon. Failing to apply traditional painting techniques involving brushes and brushes, Ghenie paints with a knife and stencil. He draws the portraits of the great figures of the 20th century, figures generally associated with genocides and totalitarian political movements. On the canvas, he flays these characters, stains them, and dirties them, in an approach close to catharsis. Painting is a political, anti-establishment, even revolutionary act. In 2005, Adrian Ghenie joined forces with Mihai Pop to launch the Plan Galeria B in Cluj-Napoca, a space dedicated to contemporary art. He opened a similar space in Berlin in 2008. Adrian Ghenie is a recognized artist on the contemporary European scene. He has exhibited his work around the world, including at the Tate in Liverpool. In 2015, he represented Romania at the Venice Biennale.
