Biography

Sonia Delaunay was a Ukrainian painter born on November 14, 1885. With her husband Robert Delaunay, they developed their own concept of abstraction as a universal language.

Sonia Delaunay continues to be celebrated as a groundbreaking figure in modern art, with her pioneering work in abstraction and color theory influencing generations of artists. In recent years, her legacy has been highlighted by exhibitions such as Sonia Delaunay: The Color of Time, which has toured major institutions, bringing her dynamic use of color and abstract forms into the global spotlight. Her paintings, textiles, and tapestries are featured in renowned collections worldwide, including the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Tate Modern in London. As her influence continues to grow, Sonia Delaunay remains an essential figure in the history of abstract and modern art.

Sonia Delaunay went even further by developing this concept in different media. The 1930s saw the blossoming of a refined abstraction, characteristic of the international style. After the war, Sonia Delaunay's paintings underwent a profound renewal that led, at the end of the 1960s, to an intensely poetic abstract art. Her formal and technical creativity was then expressed in monumental works in painting, mosaic, carpet and tapestry.

Subsequently, she expanded her approach to a holistic vision of creation, integrating painting, design, textiles, and decorative arts. This cross-disciplinary approach made her a pioneer of artistic modernity and interdisciplinary dialogue, anticipating contemporary practices in design and applied art.

Her work is regularly exhibited in major international institutions. The Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Centre Pompidou regularly dedicate exhibitions and thematic tours to her work, particularly focusing on abstraction and the 20th-century avant-garde. Since 2020, her work has continued to be included in exhibitions devoted to modernity and Orphism, confirming the enduring influence of her in art history.

Today, Sonia Delaunay is considered an essential pioneer of modern art and abstraction. His legacy, at the crossroads of painting, fashion and design, continues to inspire contemporary artists and fuel major reflections on color, rhythm and visual perception.
