Biography
Pierre & Gilles are Pierre Commoy (born in 1950) and Gilles Blanchard (born in 1953), a French artistic duo.
The two met in 1976 and decide to work together. Their work focuses on their common desire to reject family traditions and codes that decide what good taste is. Their universe is inspired by pop art and gay culture.
They use photographs that they retouch and over which they paint, and build a particular universe, generally regarded as Kitsch.
They conceive their photographs together: the lighting, accessories, costumes, and draw together the theatrical composition which will be added to the photograph. Pierre takes the snapshot and Gilles paint over it. Afterwards, they design together again the setting of their work.
