A Moment of Love. Loves VI
The question of love is the essential question of humanity. And perhaps of animality, but we will never know. It is said that courtly love was invented by poets in the 12th century, troubadours who came to flirt under the windows of beautiful women while their knight husbands went off to war, mironton, mironton, mirontaine. Nevertheless, we can imagine that love has existed since the dawn of time, that men have died for love, even if they weren't all Montagues.
When you're young, you're loved by your parents, at least ideally. But that doesn't add much; every teenager takes it for granted. No, the great interest in life is the love of a stranger, being loved, and talent, wealth, or success matter little, because without love, you're nothing at all, as Edith Piaf sang. This exhibition on love, the sixth of its name, is undoubtedly the most conceptual. Love is written, love is sung, love is found, love is lost, but it is rarely depicted.
Drawing love, photographing love is a real challenge.
Some artists gravitate toward eroticism, but this is a delusion; pleasure is not love.
The work that depicts love must be filled with love, a feeling that reflects the loving and joyful soul. It is not a portrait whose likeness matters, but an emotion captured by light. It is not so much the visitor who looks at the work, as the work that looks at you with kindness. This is, for example, what emerges from Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa or Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring; these are works that contemplate you, observe you, and offer you a moment of love.
The artists of this Amours VI exhibition also offer you a few glimpses of springtime romance. Laurent Quénéhen
