Born in New York City in 1871, Lyonel Feininger was a German-American painter, and leader of the German Expressionism movement. Beginning his career as a cartoonist in 1894, the artist moved to Germany and garnered critical acclaim for his work in this field, and also as a commercial caricaturist. He is today remembered for his close association with the Bauhaus artistic movement, as having been inspired by the earlier Cubism movements.
The artist died in 1956. His work remains on display at several of the world's most prestigious galleries, both in Germany and in his native New York City, including the Museum of Metropolitan Art. There have also been several contemporary exhibitions dedicated exclusively to Feininger's work and influence.
