Egg tempera, ink on Chinese paper. Unmarked on the recto. Verso with signature stamp of the Urlike Michaelis Archive. 2017 Städtische Galerie Fruchthalle Raststatt "From a Life - Ulrike Michaelis" (catalog color illustration p. 16). Eight vase silhouettes dominate the image. Two opposing pairs of smaller vases are inscribed within two larger pairs. The larger vases, standing side by side, are thematized twice within each other: two vases with lines and two vases with black silhouettes. The interplay of forms in the vases is ambivalent and directs the mind's perception toward the imaginary interior. At the same time, the material and painterly presence of the mottled and fibrous Chinese paper resonates.
This fascinating painting is inspired by urban building forms, which are dissolved into a composition of colors and shapes. The building remains perceptible as a theme, but the painterly fascination emanates from the harmonious tension of the composition. It combines dynamic expressiveness with a clearly structured arrangement.
Wolfgang Leber considers himself neither exclusively an abstract nor a figurative painter. He finds his subjects in the urban environment of his hometown, Berlin. He prefers simple everyday situations: cityscapes, cafés, everyday activities, and more. In this painting, it's "building" in the broader sense.
