Description
Egg tempera on Japanese paper. Unsigned. 2017, Rastatt Municipal Gallery, Fruchthalle: "Ulrike Michaelis - From a Life" (catalog, color illustration, p. 39). Two hands and two vessels are combined. The simple and clear depiction appears symbolic and has an almost sacred character. The painting is characterized by many vibrant streaks, stains, and random accents. However, it only indirectly depicts the hand of the artist herself. We see only impressions of her painting, which Ulrike Michaelis transfers to Japanese paper in a manner similar to a monotype.
This fascinating painting depicts a cityscape dissolved into a composition of colors and forms. The architecture remains perceptible as a subject, but the painterly fascination emanates from the harmonious tension of the composition and the play of color and surface, which combines dynamic expressiveness with a clear, structured arrangement.
Wolfgang Leber considers himself neither exclusively an abstract nor a figurative painter. He finds his subjects in the urban environment of his hometown, Berlin. His preference is for simple everyday situations: cityscapes, cafés, everyday activities, and more. In this painting, it's a street lamp between buildings.
