Antonio de Felipe is a Spanish contemporary painter born in Valencia in 1965, where he received his artistic training at the School of Fine Arts of Valencia. He lives and works today in Madrid, where he has developed over several decades a recognizable and influential pictorial body of work within the field of Spanish contemporary art.
The universe of Antonio de Felipe is characterized by a pop, narrative and critical approach to contemporary imagery, in which he explores the relationships between popular culture, advertising, art history and media iconography. His work is marked by a strong sense of visual humor, an aesthetic of appropriation and a constant reinterpretation of modern cultural icons.
The artist builds his work through thematic series, including Las Vacas, Logotipos, Popsport and Cinemaspop. In the latter, he represents iconic film figures such as Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo and Marilyn Monroe, integrated into compositions that include major references to art history, such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and visual citations of twentieth century masterpieces.
In his approach, Antonio de Felipe develops a permanent dialogue between classical painting and mass culture, using elements from advertising and commercial design. His famous reinterpretation of Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez illustrates this approach. The Infanta Margarita replaces the historical object with a contemporary soft drink, transforming the work into a playful critique of consumer society.
Widely recognized, Antonio de Felipe has presented his work in more than seventy solo exhibitions in Spain and internationally. He has also taken part in many major group exhibitions, including La Casa de Vacas in Madrid, the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, the City Museum of Valencia, the BBK Foundation in Bilbao, and the SOMA Museum of Art in Seoul, confirming his presence on the international art scene.
His work continues to evolve through a contemporary pop aesthetic that blends social critique, appropriation of consumer symbols and homage to art history, making him an important figure of European neopop art.
