Jake Longstreth

United States

Biography

Although he documents large swaths of the American landscape, Jake Longstreth is best known for his paintings centered on ubiquitous shopping malls and the suburban sprawl that surrounds them.
Reminiscent of the deadpan works of Ed Ruscha, Edward Hopper, and Robert Bechtle, Longstreth's landscapes examine contemporary ghost towns abandoned by American consumerist culture.

He also addresses climate change in his series, which illustrates its tangible effects on the Californian landscape, now often bathed in a hazy light due to smog and smoke from wildfires.

His work has been featured in publications such as , and . Longstreth's paintings are in the collections of the Crocker Art Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and he was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2008. Since 2015, Longstreth has co-hosted the radio show with musician Ezra Koenig.
