When encountering Egor Plotnikov's works for the first time, one experiences a double déjà-vu. On the one hand, the landscapes depicted—snow-covered or verdant fields, roadsides, forest edges, riverbanks, and other unremarkable sceneries—are familiar to those who have taken trips to the countryside or even to urban areas. Today, however, the realistic landscape, focused on the faithful representation of a specific place, has lost some of its value. It has not disappeared, but it has been relegated to the periphery of the artistic process.
It seems that this is precisely what is happening in Plotnikov's works: a rehabilitation of the realistic landscape, bringing it back from the domestic sphere or museums.
The effect of de-objectification and dematerialization produced by the large expanses of color in Plotnikov’s works recalls the visual effects of abstraction—particularly color field painting and non-figurative forms from the 1950s, by artists such as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, Helen Frankenthaler, and Morris Louis. In their works, the materiality of the canvas at a certain point—especially with the change of perspective as the viewer moves in front of the painting—yields to the illusion of an indeterminate spatiality, devoid of tactile associations and spatial landmarks, creating a sense of disorientation. To describe this effect, Clement Greenberg used terms such as "optical illusion" and "color-space."
However, any significant work of art not only operates within the realm of art by dialoguing with predecessors and transforming certain conventions, but it also opens a new dimension of experience, beyond art. In a sense, it reveals something familiar, something everyday, something that already occupies an important place in our lives but goes unnoticed. "I've seen this before," we think. "This has happened to me, more than once." Plotnikov gives form to the experience of a walk—the most common way to connect with nature, viewed as a habitat where seasons follow one another with their signs—changes in temperature, precipitation, the blooming and withering of plants, changes in colors, etc. The walk involves a certain aimlessness, a traversal of space in and of itself, a continuous space where invisible intervals appear, unmarked gaps, useless details. This experience, in its most ascetic form, accessible to everyone and stripped of any social or commercial traces, is what Plotnikov revives in his quiet and succinct paintings.
