Art nouveau
L'Art nouveau est un mouvement international d'art, de design et d'architecture qui a connu son apogée entre 1890 et 1910, pendant la période Belle Époque qui a précédé la Première Guerre mondiale. L'Art nouveau rejetait l'art académique du 19ème siècle ainsi que l'architecture et le design contemporains, qui privilégiaient l'éclectisme et l'historicisme. Au lieu de cela, l'Art nouveau s'est inspiré du monde naturel, de ses formes et de ses couleurs. Les caractéristiques communes des œuvres de l'Art nouveau sont l'asymétrie, les formes naturelles dynamiques, le sens du mouvement et les matériaux modernes (métal, fer, verre, céramique ou encore béton).
L'un des principaux objectifs du mouvement Art nouveau était de se débarrasser de la hiérarchie perçue entre les beaux-arts et les arts décoratifs. Alors que les beaux-arts, comme la peinture et la sculpture, occupaient une position élevée dans le classement artistique traditionnel, les arts appliqués n'étaient pas considérés comme du « vrai » art. L'Art nouveau partageait cet objectif avec le mouvement britannique Arts & Crafts, dont il s'est inspiré. Parmi les exemples célèbres d'œuvres de l'Art nouveau, citons les entrées des stations de métro parisiennes, les affiches à grande échelle d'Alphons Mucha et les travaux d'architecture et de design du Glasgow School, à laquelle participait l'architecte Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
