Inspired by Sci-fi

Sci-fi (short for science fiction) is a genre of fiction which incorporates futuristic and imaginative concepts, like time travel, space exploration, and advanced scientific and digital technologies. Although widely disputed, science fiction is argued by some to have its roots in ancient mythology. This camp of thought traces its roots to early fantastical works such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, a Sumerian text dating back to around 2000 BCE. Others believe that science fiction only existed as early as the 17th to 19th centuries, made possible by the scientific revolution.

Whatever its origins, science fiction has formed the basis of many books, films and TV shows, sparking the imaginations of creators around the globe. The art world is no exception to the influence of science fiction's prevalence in today's culture. Allowing artists to visualize distant worlds, where aliens wander the streets and humans reside in far-away universes, the potential of sci-fi in art is endless. Artists of all styles, genres and mediums find inspiration in its futuristic visions and concepts.

Artsper has curated a selection of works that illustrate the diversity of science fiction in art, covering a wide range of practices and styles. Brazilian artist Caio Locke weaves elements of reality with fantastical and futuristic worlds in his enchanting paintings. Sabrina Ratté's digitally-produced works blend nature and technology, challenging the distinction between the tangible and the digital. Discover the works of these artists today, among many other contemporary artists inspired by the world of sci-fi!
