Biography
Born in Austria in 1928, Friedensreich Hundertwasser was a multimedia visual artist and architect, known for his colorful, unique and decorative style, known as “transautomatism." He studied at Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts. He gained international recognition in the 1950s and 1960s for his paintings, which featured organic forms in a highly idiosyncratic style.
In addition to his work as a painter, Hundertwasser was also an outspoken environmental advocate and pioneer of “green architecture." Throughout his career, Hundertwasser remained committed to the idea that art and architecture should be in harmony with nature and should strive to create a more harmonious and sustainable world. Hundertwasser died in 2000, while aboard the Queen Elizabeth II ocean liner.
