Marko Stupar

Bosnia and Herzegowina  • 1936

Presentation

Marko Stupar was born in Vodenica, near Bozanski Pétrovac, in Bosnia, on November 11, 1936. His childhood was marked by war and difficult living conditions. He then took refuge in drawing very early on, sketching in his little notebook the landscapes of the various regions of Yugoslavia in which he stayed until he was sixteen. Then he became an engineer in a machine-tool factory, while attending evening classes at the Belgrade School of Fine Arts. At the same time as this instruction, he trained his eye by frequenting the museums of the capital and discovered with fascination the Impressionist masters (Monet, Renoir, Pissarro…). At 28, he decided to live in Paris, in this city that made him dream so much. It is with amazement that he walks the grand boulevards for the first time, strolls in the gardens, and discovers a vocation for the representation of urban landscapes. He started at Place du Tertre, under a pseudonym, and very quickly managed to get noticed and exposed. Able to live off his passion, he began to travel and brought back sights of the cities he discovered. After settling for a while in Dijon, he returned to Paris and divides his time between his city of heart and his country of origin where he has a house on the Adriatic coast, whose beaches he loves so much to paint.
