Smael Vagner Lima alias "Smael" was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1980.

He is one of the best known Brazilian street artists. One of the founders of the Graffiti movement Carioca, Smael started painting in the streets of Rio de Janeiro in the 80s.

He quickly built a world of colorful crooked creatures. Having become one of the most recognizable figures of South-American graffiti, Smael is very successful on the American continent. His notoriety also brought him to Europe. His vivid, colorful and intense works tell us about his life in Rio with great poetry.

His approach to graffiti has always been innovative and provocative. Through his works, Smael explores new possibilities of language in the streets and created a personal image that distinguishes his from other graffiti artists.

Moreover, it was thanks to him that in 2008, the Brazilian government decriminalized urban graffiti. His fame reached the United States and Europe where he took part in several collective shows. He is also involved in the creation of a graffiti school for young people from the favelas.
