Biography
Qi Baishi was a Chinese painter and calligrapher, one of the most recognised Chinese artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. His work is distinctive in its playful, illustrative style, depicting flowers, animals and other natural scenes using ink.
Baishi was born into a peasant family in the Hunan province and taught his own artistic skill in painting, drawing and calligraphy. Despite operating during the fall of the Qing dynasty, Baishi continued to maintain his own values and thrived as a painter in his region. He didn’t begin to travel until the age of forty, when he explored further afield for inspiration and lived in Beijing.
After his death in 1957, his huge portfolio of work, estimated between 8,000 and 15,000 pieces over his life, have become world-renowned, his Eagle Standing on a Pine Tree becoming one of the most expensive pieces ever sold at auction.
