Biography
Zhou Jianhua (1958-) aka Joke Valley Zhou Jianhua was born in 1958 in Qinling, in China's Shan Xi province. He grew up in the countryside during the tumultuous years of the Cultural Revolution. Very young he was interested in realistic painting and drawing from nature. It is by using ink that he frees himself from figuration. Zhou Jianhua then directs his painting towards an abstraction with lyricism imbued with religiosity. The confrontation with a certain Western abstraction does not, however, make it lose its identity: "I try to explore and discover and translate in the best possible way the handwriting and the deep feelings of my heart."
