Chéri Benga

Democratic Republic of Congo • 1957

Biography

Hyppolite Benga Nzau, aka Chéri Benga was born in 1957 in Boma, lower Congo. Today, he lives in the capital, Kinshasa. Since 34 years, he has been painting unremittingly, pioneer of painting called popular, which means artist paintings derived from people, producing simple painting, mundane life without any fuss.

Chéri Benga paints scenes of life around him, without artifices, in refined compositions where flat tints are surrounded by a dark stroke. Aesthetic asceticism is in strong contrast with expressiveness, power of truth that emanates from his works.

President of the Popular artists association in Congo "AAPPO", he went to Belgium in 2010, then in 2011 to represent popular artists during organized exhibitions in Louvain and Antwerp. He is also regularly exhibited in Europe.
