Chéri Chérin

Democratic Republic of Congo  • 1955

Presentation

Joseph Kinkonda, known as Chéri Chérin, was born in 1955 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, city in which he still lives today. He started, like most painters in Congo, to paint advertisements and doing canvases for commercial purposes.

His colorful canvases, painted with oil paint, overflow life, and are not devoid of a certain irony, which can sometimes be squeaky. They represent the society in Congo as well as more international subjects, such as the end of the Apartheid in South Africa.

Being in the shadow of Moke and Chéri Samba for a long time, Chéri Chérin is recognized for his participation in the Africa Remix exhibition in 2005. In 2015, his most emblematic pieces were presented at the "Beauté Congo-Congo Kitoko" exhibition by the Cartier Foundation, in Paris.
