Thierry Noir

Thierry Noir is a French contemporary artist, painter, street artist, and pioneer of European graffiti, born in 1958 in Lyon. He is internationally recognized as one of the first artists to have repeatedly painted on the Berlin Wall, transforming this symbol of the Cold War into a huge support for artistic expression. Arriving in West Berlin in 1982, he settles in a squat located in the immediate vicinity of the Wall. Faced with this omnipresent border, he decided from 1984 to intervene directly on the concrete, almost daily creating brightly colored paintings despite the risks associated with the surveillance of the border guards of the German Democratic Republic. This spontaneous and committed approach marks a decisive turning point in the history of street art and urban art.

Thierry Noir's plastic language is immediately recognizable through his famous faces with elongated profiles, thick black outlines, bold colors, and deliberately simplified shapes. Originally designed to be executed quickly to avoid official checks, these figures became his artistic signature. Influenced by comics, Pop Art, expressionism, punk culture, New Wave music, and the energy of the Berlin underground scene of the 1980s, he develops a direct, accessible, and universal aesthetic, where the spontaneity of the gesture takes precedence over the search for detail.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Thierry Noir continued his work in the studio and on monumental walls around the world. He creates paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, and numerous murals, while maintaining his emblematic graphic vocabulary. His work questions themes of freedom, borders, memory, reunification, identity, and the appropriation of public space. Several original fragments of the Wall painted by the artist are today preserved in museums and public collections, notably at the East Side Gallery in Berlin, one of the most important open-air art galleries in the world.

Thierry Noir's work has been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and several other countries. His works have been presented at the East Side Gallery, the Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, the Howard Griffin Gallery in London, as well as at international fairs and galleries dedicated to contemporary art and street art. He has also collaborated with major artists such as Keith Haring and Kiddy Citny, contributing to making the Berlin Wall a universal symbol of freedom and creation. An essential figure in contemporary urban art, Thierry Noir holds a major place in the history of graffiti, street art, contemporary painting, and public art, his work remaining inseparable from the history of the Berlin Wall and the artistic transformation of urban space.
