A painting that does not reveal itself at first glance.
On a nuanced gray background, incisive lines in charcoal or pastel, interact with little color. A nervous, precise graphic design already confirms the future of the canvas. The lines intertwine and slip under transparent and luminous colored surfaces in measured tones, and embrace them; imprecise female bodies emerge in the slowness of the gaze, they are fluid, impalpable, in pain, stopped in their fall.
“You have to take the time to discover. I want the gaze to stop and look for what is evoked, but not figured or represented. I attach great importance to this complexity in reading", specifies Alain Alquier. The body appears in all its fragility: “It does not reveal itself at first sight, a body in suspension, knotted, tense, twisted, in a need for elevation, to tend towards the light through a dance of humility in the face of the force of nature", analyzes gallerist Johan Demessine.
“I express what I am and what I feel, specifies Alain Alquier: the fragility of life. Life is hard, even if there are wonderful moments. I express this. My bodies are suspended. Either they try to rise, to go to the sky, even if we don't believe it! Either they fall, they fall". This is how, on the same surface, two patterns and two treatments coexist: on the one hand, bold and strong black graphics, which strongly evoke natural elements, reminiscent of a pattern old (from the “Bois de Vie" series linked to the vine stock), on the other, colored glazes, effects of transparency in which a female body can be guessed against a gray background. “By his neutrality, he does not locate the motive. It allows me to work the color for itself, which remains sober and localized and to have transparency. It leaves a space that is ultimately wider and bigger than the canvas".
The current work is the fruit of a slow reflection where little by little, the painter moved away from the initial motif of the vine stock, by introducing the female body, another perception of the wood of life The desire to go towards essential opens up new horizons.
