Biography
Gwen Marseille was born in 1977 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. He lives and works in Bordeaux. After a Fine Arts degree at the University of Bordeaux III and in parallel with his musical career (he is a drummer and works on various rock, electro and improvisation projects) Gwen Marseille had his first exhibition in 2002 at Zoobizarre and then participated in the finissage of the collective show Perav'Prod at the CAPC Museum Of Contemporary Art in Bordeaux the following year.
Interested in documenting reality, Gwen Marseille gets photographs from his family albums or produces portraits himself, ordinary scenes with people he knows or anonymous persons. He produces images starting from a pictorial and graphic language that questions the certainties of reality.
His realistic aesthetic plays with a dilution of the material that he uses, showing each layer down to the white of the support. His practice favors several mediums including painting on canvas and on paper, drawing, ink and watercolor.
