Presentation

Born in 1960 in a labour class background, his education designates him as an electro-mechanic. While preparing the certificate he is noticed by his drawing teacher who encourages him to start art studies.

Once his certificate obtained, he will then spend five years at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art in Paris. There, for his professors and companions he can be nothing else than a sculptor. He will follow a classic curriculum, approaching successively through internships all the professions and techniques of sculpture. It is at this time that he begins to expose but the success that seizes his best pieces does not allow him to present convincing works for the entrance examination to the Fine Arts. His application will not be accepted.

Gosti was born under the sign of the fracture. His CV, articulated around breaks, around losses of beloved ones, is in this respect very significant. The man then rebuilds himself every time from scattered pieces, from different stories still without being able to find a complete homogeneity. Nothing amazing then in the fact that his characters look like him. They spring from a splinter of material, display their fractures, are marked with scars and with scarification.

All seem to result from the improbable combination of second hand pieces, from fragment of previous adventures. Even bronzes are no exception to the rule, as if the pliability of the metal in fusion had the only function to maintain the consistence of the various fragments of the initial construction and to preserve their track. At the end of such a hypothetical process of their revival Gosti’s characters present an image of sweetness and tenderness contrasting with the harshness and the hardness of the materials which compose them.

Their glance marks the surprise of still existing after so many adversities. And this is where the artist’s magic operates. Gosti’s work does not weigh, does not threaten, does not judge. It seems to understand and to know the most intimate grieves of who looks at it, having already lived so much. Beyond the fracture of the matter, Gosti speaks about the fracture of the souls.
