Miguel Martin was born in 1947 in Nice. At the moment of his graduation from art school, Nouveau réalisme and Fluxus were flourishing. He was particularly interested in Yves Klein's work. At the time, artists such as Simon Hantaï and Groupe BMPT were trying to find ways to rethink painting and develop a new meaning for it.
Miguel Martin and artists Isnard, Chacallis, Charvolen and Maccaferri formed the Groupe70 (created in the early 1970s) at the same time with the Support-Surface group. Their work, which questions the relation between plastic space and physical space, became more prominent after 1986, when artists started to use concrete and color; Miguel Martin systematically investigates the relation between the painting and the wall.
