Laurence de Valmy is a French artist born in Zaire in 1974 and who now lives and works in the New-York Area. She studied art both in France and at the university of Michigan in the United-States.
Her works reflect on the relationship between art and modern technologies, and more precisely on the use of social media by artists. Her ‘Post series depicts fictional social media posts of famous artists, which show that she has a precise knowledge of history of art while illustrating a critical reflexion on modern technologies. Each artwork, created with acrylic, is a clever juxtaposition of an original painting and an imagined social media conversation between two artists, historically accurate and yet humorous. The artist combines her interest in art history and her skills in painting to appropriate with talent these iconic artworks and to invite the viewer to consider them with renewed interest by replacing them in the historical context of their creation.
In the spring of 2017 she was awarded an Art2st residency by the Eileen Kaminsky Foundation at Mana Contemporary, NJ for her project “the Post series”. Her work has been shown in various group shows and she has had three solo shows in 2016 in New Jersey and in New York City. Her work can be found in private collections in Europe, the USA and Asia.
Outside of her studio, Laurence de Valmy likes to connect with other artists and writes on her blog, The Curious Frenchy, to share interviews of passionate people that she meets.
