Jimmy Richer: “Imagination as organic thought” (Excerpts)
“Jimmy Richer is a storyteller as much as he is an artist, but his stories are special: they have neither beginning nor end. The funny representations straight out of the artist's mind are composed into archipelagos. The only way to understand them is to navigate from detail to detail. Elusive as a whole, they imply a wandering of the gaze like Far Eastern painting. Eliminating any rationalization of space through perspective, the images are revealed little by little, as if through an unrolling scroll; it doesn't matter if it is impossible to look at the left side and the right side simultaneously. Imagination is the queen of faculties said Baudelaire; in accordance with this principle, let us imagine the meeting of the poet with Jimmy Richer and the emphatic praise that the first could have pronounced about the second.
Jimmy Richer is the fertile ground in which the imagination has sown. His works seem to be nothing more than excrescences of themselves proliferating under the light of a tropical climate. The spectator may try to distinguish the root from the top, but he will not succeed. His work illustrates the principle according to which nature abhors a vacuum: everything is only growth and fertilization, each form seems to generate another. Thus the plant world is omnipresent there but very often also that of sex.
This universe welcomes stories borrowed from literature, science and even religion. He reinvents the creations of Marie-Antoine Carême, Talleyrand's pastry chef who conceived his cakes as architectures ( Carême series, les yeux grand Ouverts ). The Encoffrées adventures chest series is a tribute to the literature of our childhood: Treasure Island ( La Bande de flint ) or The Thousand and One Nights ( Les Passes-murailles ) The sarcophagus that he calls My body, it is the place without recourse to which I am condemned , is a reflection on death nourished by the reading of the sociologist Philippe Ariès and the discovery of the theology of light of Abbot Suger . »
