Robert Doisneau was a French photographer born in 1912 in Gentilly, considered a pioneer in humanist photography and photojournalism. Born to a bourgeois family in the southern suburbs of Paris, Doisneau studied engraving and lithography, and became an industrial photographer for Renault. After joining the French army in World War II, both as a soldier and photographer, he started to capture post-war Parisian life and continued this into the 50s and 60s.
Doisneau’s most famed pieces depict candid shots of Parisian life in the early-to-mid 20th century, and his style is defined by a fascination for the everyday lives of humans, often showing playful or ironic scenes. His most renowned shots have become iconic French postcards, particularly The Kiss, a symbolic image of young love in Paris.
