Presentation

Philippe Roussel was born in Nimes in 1963.

A professional painter, he started painting the landscapes of Nimes garrigue gouache, when he was still very young. Nature became subsequently his favorite subject.

After taking some classes of art history and being interested in archeology, he decided to devote himself solely to painting. He is stongly influenced by Pablo Picasso's work (Bullfighting, Cubism and Chinese ink) as well as by Antoni Tapies' (Abstraction).

But he quickly detached from these influences in order to develop his own personal style, and after a semi-figurative period, he started including scripture on his canvases. In his pieces he juggles between symbols, references of historical stories, elements of nature and the representation of ordinary objects.
