Biography

Menachem Gueffen (1932-2022) is a major Israeli painter, recognized for his work blending figurative painting, expressionism, poetic abstraction, and Israeli contemporary art. Born in Jerusalem during the British mandate, he studied at the prestigious Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design before continuing his training in Paris, where he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. This French stay permanently marked his plastic language and allowed him to discover the great currents of modern European painting while affirming a personal writing deeply rooted in Mediterranean culture.

Throughout a career spanning over six decades, Menachem Gueffen develops a body of work characterized by a luminous palette, a free touch, and a constant attention to light. His compositions explore the landscapes of Israel, Mediterranean cities, still lifes, flower bouquets, portraits, scenes of daily life, and views of Jerusalem, which he interprets in a painting where color becomes the main vector of emotion. Influenced by the research of post-impressionism, the School of Paris, and expressionism, he progressively simplifies forms in favor of a more synthetic writing, favoring chromatic relationships, rhythms, and the vibrations of matter.

Working mainly in oil on canvas, but also in drawing, gouache, watercolor, and engraving, Menachem Gueffen builds a pictorial universe where memory, poetry, and observation of reality meet. His painting combines the spontaneity of gesture and the rigor of composition, giving rise to works that are at once warm, sensitive, and timeless.
