Presentation

Sourav Chatterjee is an Indian painter born in 1970 in Kolkata (Calcutta).

He has been living and working in Marseille since May 2017.

After studying at the School of Fine Arts in Kolkata, Sourav undertakes a painting resolutely outside the trends of current contemporary art, an introspective work, far from spectacular art, consumable and disposable, which questions without relaxes the condition of man in today's world. Sourav Chatterjee's reflection is nourished by knowledge of ancient Indian texts, mythologies, especially Greek, and literary and artistic references such as European symbolism.

Sourav's painting crystallizes a worn, charred Earth, thanks to the use of evocative colors sometimes mixed with plaster or marble dust. However, in a constant concern to reassess the dark omen that the artist lets us sense, the treatment of light, a soft and soothing light, suggests the hope of a possible renewal, the use of gold leaf and blue pigment underlines the sacralization of the moment.

The characters who inhabit this desolate universe seem to implore some god or are only waiting for a final or transitory event, the advent of a better world. This abandoned humanity wanders on the surface of the earth or the sea, as pilgrims would in an atoning mode.
