Käthe Kollwitz was a German artist, born in 1867 in Prussia. The artist, a key figure of the European Expressionism movement, created etchings, sculpture and lithography prints which interrogated the effect of economic equality and war on the working class. In the mid-1880s, Kollwitz studied in Berlin, an opportunity which afforded the artist insight into the drawings and socially engaged art of Max Klinger.
In the latter stages of her career, Kollwitz became the first female professor at the Prussian Academy of Art and was awarded honorary degree status from the university. Today, her work remains exhibited at several of the most prestigious galleries in the world, including the Museum of Metropolitan Art in New York City, the Getty Research Institute, and several museums dedicated to the artist.
