His work explores the relationship between colour, form, and perception, creating compositions that are both visually engaging and conceptually open.
Made Galung Wiratmaja is a contemporary Balinese artist, born in 1972 in Sukawati, Gianyar. He studied Fine Art at Udayana University in Denpasar and began painting at the age of thirteen. Over the past two decades, he has developed a distinctive visual language that bridges abstraction, abstract composition, and figurative expressionism.
His work explores the relationship between colour, form, and perception, creating compositions that are both visually engaging and conceptually open. Often depicting human figures seen from behind and immersed in layered abstract environments, his paintings evoke a sense of mystery and invite viewers to form their own interpretations.
Central to his practice is the Balinese philosophical concept of and —the visible and invisible worlds. This duality is reflected in his balanced compositions and in a refined palette of ochres, greens, browns, and greys.
Working intuitively, Galung allows each composition to emerge through a dynamic interplay of control and spontaneity, resulting in harmonious and thought-provoking works. His paintings are held in private collections worldwide, and he has exhibited extensively in Bali and internationally. Since 2021, he has collaborated with Tobian Art Gallery in Florence.
