Description

A verdant atmosphere envelops this evocative composition. Muted greens and earthy ochres create a hazy, atmospheric depth. Figures drift across the canvas in a ghostly procession. Their forms emerge and disappear within translucent layers of paint. The brushwork feels spontaneous and fluid. Each silhouette suggests a quiet narrative of movement and gathering. Light filters through a dense, foliage-like haze. This creates a sense of suspended time. The figures possess a timeless quality. They inhabit a space between reality and memory. The palette remains harmonious and organic. Soft transitions blend the subjects into their surrounding environment. This visual fusion emphasizes a deep connection between humanity and nature. The artwork explores the fragility of presence. Glimpses of white and pale violet break the monochromatic green haze. These subtle accents guide the eye across the horizontal plane. The composition remains balanced yet open. It invites the viewer to contemplate the shared solitude of the crowd. The texture varies from thin washes to denser applications of pigment. This creates a rhythmic surface that mirrors the organic chaos of a forest or a distant memory. Focus settles on the blurred edges of the figures.

Presentation

Made Galung Wiratmaja is a contemporary Balinese artist, born in 1972 in Sukawati, Gianyar. He studied Fine Art at Udayana University in Denpasar and began painting at the age of thirteen. Over the past two decades, he has developed a distinctive visual language that bridges abstraction, abstract composition, and figurative expressionism.

His work explores the relationship between colour, form, and perception, creating compositions that are both visually engaging and conceptually open. Often depicting human figures seen from behind and immersed in layered abstract environments, his paintings evoke a sense of mystery and invite viewers to form their own interpretations.

Central to his practice is the Balinese philosophical concept of and —the visible and invisible worlds. This duality is reflected in his balanced compositions and in a refined palette of ochres, greens, browns, and greys.

Working intuitively, Galung allows each composition to emerge through a dynamic interplay of control and spontaneity, resulting in harmonious and thought-provoking works. His paintings are held in private collections worldwide, and he has exhibited extensively in Bali and internationally. Since 2021, he has collaborated with Tobian Art Gallery in Florence.
