Hideka Tonomura was born in 1979, in Kobe, Hyogo pref. Graduated from the Visual Arts school, broadcasting & filmmaking department. Started her career in 2002 as a photographer, won Nikon Juna21 prize in 2003.
Her photographs show her obstinacy towards her family and are acclaimed for their uniqueness, they are very physiologic and at the same time, somewhat comedic. Hideka Tonomura received lots of media exposure in various fields. She is one of the most talked about up-and-coming photographers in Japan.
Hideka Tonomura worked for several years as a hostess in a Shinjuku Bar. Her work inspired by this experience draws on her life in two worlds - one inside and the other outside this bar. Inside is a vivid fantasy world where only fake emotions are shown. The fakery is stripped in the outside world, leaving it desolate and barren. Emotion is scarcely encountered, but when found it is both precious and poignant.
